Many people and apparently the maker of this adapter seem to believe you can functionally use only 4 wires inside a RJ45 cable to sustain a reliable LAN connection which would allow you to use one RJ45 cable to be used as two cables using this adapter.

But we have 4 pairs of wires in a utp cable. Its adoption and evolution as a medium for high-speed digital data communications has been a matter of convenience. Pairs 2 and 3 are used for normal 10100 Mbps networks while pairs 1 and 4 are reserved. The 1000Base-T 1 Gbps standard requires all four pairs wired as 1-2 3-6 4-5 7-8.
