Patella Bone Diagram. This tendon helps hold the patella in place along with other muscles found in and near the quadriceps so it can do its most important job protect the knee joint. The foot bones shown in this diagram are the talus navicular cuneiform cuboid metatarsals and calcaneus.
It extends from the patella otherwise known as the kneecap. Kneecap is a triangular shaped bone that covers and protects the distal surface of the anterior femur. The bones of the leg are the femur tibia fibula and patella.
The femur forms the ball and socket hip joint with the hip bone and forms the knee joint with the tibia and patella.
The patellar ligament is an extension of the quadriceps tendon. Commonly called the kneecap the patella is special because it is one of the few bones that are not present at birth. The patella kneecap is located at the front of the knee joint within the patellofemoral groove of the femur. It is classified as a sesamoid type bone due to its position within the quadriceps tendon and is the largest sesamoid bone in the body.
