Older trucks especially out of warranty I would consider doing all the delete stuff - if you can especially the EGR crap. There are a few alternatives to a full delete such as a blocker plate to stop the EGR valve from opening or on some models you can simply have a tuner disable it from the computer. The EGR valve is directly under the charged air tube as seen in the image provided.
Your EGR cooler failure is directly related to the cooling system clogging up with sand and grit form the casting.
